The (new) Melbourne Underground Film Festival

MUFF, Year Zero (2023)

We want films that are strange, daring, experimental, avant-garde and indefinable, radical, subversive, transgressive, unorthodox and weird.

If you’ve got one of those you could lend us for a night that’d be great.

The Melbourne Underground Film Festival takes place in September. We’ll be showing short films only in our first year. Up to 30 minutes, and completed any time since 1/1/2021.

See below and on our website for more details.

MUFF is but a wee young sprite of a festival with pockets a-brimmin’ with air. We foresee cash and in-kind prizes in our future, but for Year Zero it’s likely to be a certificate, a round of applause, and a comely laurel wreath to sport in the market.

• Secure online screeners are the only method of submission accepted.

• Films do not have to be subtitled or dubbed if this is not essential to the comprehension of the film.

• If it is essential they must be subtitled or dubbed in English.

• If selected, your exhibition copy will be required no later than November 10, 2023. (Exhibition requirements will be sent with acceptance letters.)

• All shipping and handling costs to and from the festival office will be covered by the entrant.

• It's the participant's responsibility to make sure the rights to their films are cleared for the festival. The festival will not be held liable for any issues or lawsuits regarding any films that are entered into the festival.

• Fees will not be reimbursed if the film/video submitted is not selected for the festival.

• The festival will take due care of all entrants/participants materials but the festival will not be responsible for any loss and/or damage to materials while they are in possession of the festival.

• If you are accepted into the 2023 festival there may be an opportunity to have your film shown at other festival-related screenings throughout the year, of which you will be notified for permission.

• By entering this festival, you agree to have 1-30 seconds of excerpts from your film used for festival promotional purposes only (including web, cinema, TV) - unless you advise otherwise.
