Handwritten letters become source of inspiration for original short films produced by filmmakers from all over the world and commissioned by the Letters’ Festival in collaboration with the London Short Film Festival. This is Movieletters’ project: a unique mix between letter writing and film making that, throughout the years, has given birth to wonderful works of art.

For the 2016 edition of the Movieletters’ competition, film directors from around the world are invited to make short films translating into cinematic language the words contained in the letter written by Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Peace Messenger.

The text of the letter, downloadable in different languages, must appear either wholly or partially (simple quotes are also allowed) within the short film, in the way that the author deems most appropriate: voice-over, lettering motion, opening and closing credits, etc.

A dedicated jury will decide on the short film finalists and the winner.

Best Movieletter
Best Cinematography
Best Under 21 Short Film
The organization of the Festival reserves the right to assign further awards or honourable mentions including:

Writing the distance Special Award – Best Inclusion Short Film
Sponsor Special Awards – To be defined

Social Purpose
Main partner of the Movieletters 2016 project is the Jane Goodall Institute, an international
non-profit organization founded in San Francisco (USA) by Dr. Jane Goodall, whose studies on the behaviour of chimpanzees have changed the way of understanding our relationship with other animals. Since 1977, the Institute has built a worldwide network of people who, united by a common spirit and technology, commit themselves to improve the quality of life on the planet.

The invitation – conveyed through the competition and addressed by the founder of the Institute to all young people representing the future of the planet – is in particular to participate in the international program for the environmental and humanitarian commitment Roots & Shoots:

“I encourage you to get involved with our Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots movement which has members of all ages, kindergarten through university (with more and more adults joining in) in 140 countries.

You just need to get together with a group of your friends and, between you, chose three projects to make the world a better place. One project to help humans, one to help other animals, one to help
the environment. Or you can work on one big project that incorporates all three.”
Dr. Jane Goodall
