GRRL HAUS CINEMA

Cambridge, United States

GRRL HAUS CINEMA is an ongoing program of short films and video art made by women, non-binary, genderqueer, and trans people. A mix of local, national, and international artists present work from a variety of disciplines: narrative, documentary, experimental, and conceptual. With an emphasis on low budget and DIY, GRRL HAUS is a space for underrepresented voices in the arts today.

For 2021 our main screenings will be held in July at two outdoor film events taking place in Berlin Germany.

In addition all submissions will also be considered for our monthly curated online screenings, which includes interviews with the filmmakers.

If we have permission (due to pandemic) to make more live events throughout the year - we will! And we hope to continue our end of the year event at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, MA.

GRRL HAUS is not your typical film festival, instead of having one big event - we have multiple events throughout the year. Our goal is to show as many quality short films made by women, non-binary, genderqueer, and trans people to an international audience.

We completely celebrate DIY culture and focus on sharing works to all different types of audiences. This can include audiences at international museums or to audiences at underground clubs. We believe that every audience deserves the chance to see these works, rather than just the typical film festival networking crowd. We want to reach all audiences and celebrate the inclusivity of creative and unique work in film.

OUR HISTORY:
GRRL HAUS started in 2014 at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, MA, USA. Since then the event has showcased over 400 filmmakers, including multiple musical performances, video art installations, exhibitions and local vendors. In 2016 GRRL HAUS relocated to Berlin Germany and started hosting small screenings of local films. As we established are identity in Berlin we began to include music and arts.

Within the past few years we have grown to not just showcase films, but also art, music, dance, photography, handmade crafts and clothing, and even tarot, astrology and spiritual meet ups. The idea of GRRL HAUS is constantly expanding. We believe in no boundaries for creativity and are constantly looking for new ways to celebrate the work of underrepresented people.

For our complete history of screenings, events, exhibitions, concerts and parties - you can view all our teasers and selected artists on our Media page : https://www.grrlhauscinema.com/media.html

OUR PROJECTS:
International Screenings:
Our international screenings are curated from our over 400 yearly submissions. Through these submissions we select our favorite short films. This includes our end of the year festival screening at the Brattle Theatre and museum screenings at the prestigious Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.

Mobile Kino Screenings:
We hold 3-4 screenings through Mobile Kino Berlin a year. These screenings we curate around the best of our local short film submissions and a selection of international short films. We invite the filmmakers to Q&A’s following the screenings, where they discus their works.

Loophole Monthly Screenings:
Once a month GRRL HAUS hosts screenings at Loophole Berlin. These events focus on sharing local films by local filmmakers. All of these screenings are free to enter and enjoy. We believe it’s important to keep some events free for the public.
These events build up our sense of local community and follows through with one of our founding principles : sharing our excitement and love for low budget, DIY events and making them accessible to everyone.

Online Screenings / Gimme 5:
At GRRL HAUS CINEMA we were forced to cancel all our events during this Corona season, and every artist on our program list was left without a show venue. Energized and in defiance of the virus, we wanted now more than ever to keep going. We want the artists to keep going. We want to encourage them to stay active, to create, and most importantly to show their work. We want to reverse the status quo of art being left behind in times of crisis when it is needed most.

For past year (and into the future) we have been running online screenings, which we have been curating and presenting live on our online platform. We have been hosting these themed screenings on our website and Vimeo, as well as promoting all the films on our social media platforms. We host 10-15 short films on our site for a week. And then we remove them and continue hosting other themed sets.

Through these screenings our audiences are able to watch amazing short films in the comfort and safety of their home. All of the online screenings are free to watch, so they are accessible to anyone in these uncertain times.

Mystic Film Festival

Mystic Film Festival is an annual event that showcases independent feature-length and short-form narrative films and documentaries from around the world. The festival brings together a diverse group of filmmakers and audiences to explore ideas, discuss the filmmaking process, and celebrate creativity. Through engaging community events, industry panels, and film screenings by acclaimed and up-and-coming talent, we aim to make the festival a special experience for filmmakers and audiences alike.

Now in its fourth year, the festival will take place October 21-24, 2021 over four days and four nights at venues in Mystic, Connecticut and neighboring Connecticut Shoreline towns. Our cornerstone venue is Mystic Luxury Cinemas in Olde Mistick Village. We open with a local premiere and close the festival with an awards event where the best film in each category is recognized. Our first screenplay competition in 2020 was a great success, and we're excited to offer it again in 2021. The top winners of the screenplay competition will be announced at the festival in October. In addition to our in-person screenings, workshops, Q&As, and panels, part of our festival will be online. More details about our online platform will be shared on our website in the coming months.

Our festival was created by area filmmakers and artists to nurture local talent, to promote films made in Connecticut and other parts of the Northeast, and to bring unique films to our community.

At the halfway point between New York City and Boston lies the beautiful New England seaport of Mystic. Known for its rich seafaring past and maritime history, it is also a popular destination for food and locally produced craft beer and wine, art galleries and museums, and hiking along the pristine Connecticut shoreline and nature reserves.
Mystic is easily accessible by car and rail, and the Tweed New Haven Regional Airport in New Haven, Connecticut and T.F. Green International Airport in Providence, Rhode Island are both within an hour’s drive.

FIDOCS International Documentary Film festival

Santiago, Chile

The Santiago International Documentary Film Festival (FIDOCS) is the main broadcasting, diffusion, and competition event for documentary cinema in Chile and Latin America.
Focused on the promotion of dialogue and reflection, as well as in training audiences towards the appreciation of documentary film in a context of permanent transformation, FIDOCS seeks to explore the multiple paths available in documentary making as well as in the drifts proper to nonfiction works. In its program, FIDOCS incorporates the works of both experienced and emerging directors in order to address the question of “THE REAL”, and in doing so, it considers the various dimensions, disciplinary frontiers, and tensions that the question “what is real?”, as well as the documentary genre itself, has to offer us.

Throughout its history, FIDOCS has positioned itself as one of the most distinguished documentary film festivals in Latin America, standing as a privileged platform to screen contemporary cinema and to promote critical thinking. Year by year, under its selective curatorial approach, FIDOCS not only calls for important exponents of national and international audiovisual sectors to exhibit their work in Santiago, but also, in using this city as a film hub, it calls on such exponents to question, interpret, and re-write the status of contemporary documentary film practice today.

For the promotion, positioning, and exhibition of Chilean and International films, FIDOCS displays three main competitions. These sections include: INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION; CHILEAN COMPETITION, and EMERGENT SHORT COMPETITION FOR NATIONAL FILMS.

In addition, FIDOCS has the main industry activity, DOCS IN PROGRESS, for Latin-American works in progress where the jury (editors, directors, sound designers, producers, programmers), in addition to choosing a winner, feeds the filmmakers to carry out the post-production of their films and encourage their diffusion and transmission. This section is jointly run together with WIP section of CHILEDOC CONECTA.

The festival also has important training and extension activities in its FIDOCS SCHOOL, where students from film schools and communications from all over Chile so that its most outstanding students are in an intergenerational and interdisciplinary space with international and national festival guests; attending Master Classes, workshops, dialogues, among others.

In addition, in keeping with its interdisciplinary vocation, FIDOCS intends to accompany its screenings of other artistic interventions such as installations, exhibitions, performances, that from their own expressive means dialogue with the documentary concept. This is how FIDOCS EXPANDED section arises, where various artists, video-artists and filmmakers, all of them linked to the fields of sound or visuals, exhibit their work.
Finally, the chosen films will be screened after the completion of the festival, in different regions of Chile and abroad, at BEST OF FIDOCS section. The purpose is the cultural extension of the festival at a territorial level, putting emphasis on the circulation of the films at the regional level, being able to program replicas in the national territory as well as abroad.

*FIDOCS will be held with theatrical screenings.

Philly's #1 alternative film festival.

The Philadelphia Unnamed Film Festival (PUFF) selects 95% of its micro and short films. We have featured 30+ films in each of our 5 years, and work hard to showcase as many independent filmmakers as possible. More than just a "horror" film festival, each year PUFF includes an eclectic mix of features and shorts, including sci-fi, action, documentary, bizzare, drama and more.

PUFF was founded as an alternative festival to bring new and undiscovered films to cinema fans in Philadelphia. The festival has previously featured such notable films as Tragedy Girls, Witch in the Window, Happy Face, Antrum, and Karate Kill. We tout an excellent success rate for our selections, with 95% of our feature films from the first few years of the festival receiving independent distribution.

PUFF works to connect upstart filmmakers with distribution outlets by working with local independent film distributors, and to offer a place for filmmakers to gain exposure and network with as many industry professionals as possible. Filmmakers are welcomed to participate in our digital screening library to spread awareness about their projects.

All accepted films are screened at the 2223 Theater (2223.fish) on our theatrical sized screen. The theater is located in the trendy neighborhood of Fishtown, known for its popular restaurants, bars and art scene. (Venue may change due to current state and city COVID restrictions).

Festival Director Alex Gardner offers a long history of film festival and horror journalism experience, working with other film festivals in the past such as Another Hole in the Head, Buffalo Dreams and the Bay Area’s SiliCon.

PUFF's aim is to grow into a multimedia experience where people can enjoy our great city while experiencing the best in new cinema.

CLIT is a film festival that turns audience members into treasure hunters in search of the venues where films will be screened. They get clues about the screening location through the festival's website and social media.

The venue can be anywhere, except at a regular movie theatre, because CLIT is an acronym for Cinema em Locais Inusitados e Temporários (Cinema in Unusual and Temporary Venues).

For the 2024 edition, we welcome submissions from all genres and lengths.
We will privilege works that focus on topics such as freedom and biodiversity and environmental protection.

We strive to have venues which are in line with the films theme.
For instance, in October 2021, a medium-length documentary on salsa was followed by a salsa class, where guests and audience had the chance to dance a bit.
And, in October 2023, a biopic about the German singer-songwriter Gerhard Gundermann, who chose to work in coal mines until he died, was screened at the remains of the Lousal Mine factory, near Grândola.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS:
Festroia is a non-profit organization based in Setúbal, Portugal. It was created in 1987 to promote film activities, allowing its founders to continue the work developed in 1985 and 1986, when they organized the first two editions of Festroia - International Film Festival. Until 1994, the Association held this festival in Tróia, migrating it in 1995 to Setúbal, where it stayed until its 30th and last edition, in 2014.
Over the years, it welcomed artists like Pedro Almodóvar, Christopher Lee, Jane Russell, Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Christopher Walken, Agnieszka Holland, Dome Karukoski, Dennis Hopper, Christiane Torloni, Michael York, Mickey Rooney, Maria de Medeiros, Alberto Sordi, Joaquim de Almeida, Assumpta Serna, Ingvar Sigurðsson or Ben Gazzara.
In 2007, Festroia was the first international film festival worldwide to compensate its carbon footprint.

Monte de Letras is a cultural organization in the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo, in the Alentejo region. Open to all forms of art, it is guided by values such as biodiversity and environmental protection, creativity, and freedom.
In 2023-24, it was responsible for the "Stories on the walls" project, that celebrated the 50 years of the Carnation Revolution by promoting the collective painting of 6 news murals, talks with experts from Chile, Portugal and Ireland, as well as photo exhibitions of historical murals that were shown at venues in Portugal, Serbia and Northern Ireland.

Short Movie Club Film Festival Nefiltravanae Kino

Vilnius, Lithuania

The purpose of the festival refers to awareness of both the external filters on the screen, including censorship (commercial, ideological, aesthetic), and the internal filters of screen perception and projection, including self-censorship. NEFILTRAVANAE KINO is an exploration of aestheticization and commodification in art. The next aim of the festival is to expose the complexity, manysidedness, and variety of filmmaking.

NEFILTRAVANAE KINO is a film festival that is held by the Short Movie Club, the platform for cinematic projects. NEFILTRAVANAE KINO is ADAMI Media Prize qualified festival. The International Film Studies Conference is held at the same time as the film festival. In this way, film theory and practice are integrated together at the NEFILTRAVANAE KINO.

Originally the festival was held in Belarus, but because of political repression and publicly stated anti-war stance, screenings and events can be held in different countries. First of all in Lithuania (Vilnius). For example, the 10th Nefiltravanae Kino took place in Berlin, Vilnius and Helsinki last year. There were selected 63 films for 12 film programmes. https://shortmovie.club/programmes/10-2024/

The concept of the NEFILTRAVANAE KINO (Unfiltered Cinema):

ALIENATION PROBLEM

We live in a world of malls and cinema multiplexes. We see that indie cinema and non-commodity art go to the periphery of public attention. Primitive attractions replace the cinematography. The escape audience is alienated behind the big screen. So modern mainstream cinema is part of a manipulating tool that leads to the society of alienation. Thus the tendency is that indie cinema becomes more unreadable for the wide audience. We should understand the context of the filmmaker to understand the independent cinema. That is why the NEFILTRAVANAE KINO concept implies the physical presence of filmmakers.

FILM SELECTION PROBLEM
Filmmakers shoot millions of movies. And thousands of short film festivals organize screenings all over the world every year. On average, several thousand films are submitted to a film festival. So various good films can be neglected for whatever reason. Often selecting probability is like winning a lottery. As a result, filmmakers are left with no feedback. It is a paradox that no one can hear you in the age of the Internet! The mainstream culture prefers attractions and casual viewing.

Also, this idea is based on the film selection problem. Perhaps it’s no surprise one person, i.e. programme director at best, or even students of film schools make a preliminary decision to select a movie. Сoncordance of judges or previewers is more seldom thing than the difference of background, tastes. So selection or judging can be one-sided or perfunctory. It is not bad as the programme director has a good taste and aesthetic sensitivity, of course. But we’ve discovered another conception of “unfiltered cinema”. We matched it against “the best of the best” way. This way aids to perceive cinematic idiom without the dictate of art-curators.

CELEBRATION OF INDIE CINEMA
So the Unfiltered Cinema Film Festival tries to avoid “the best of the best” way but it does not ignore it completely, sure. The festival selects fiction, animation, documentary, experimental and virtual reality sections. A jury awards the best film in every section. The festival holds the screenings at cinema theatres, the National Centre for Contemporary Arts, and art-spaces.

Our aim is to gather people in art, to have a dialogue to be happy with smart communication. Cinema is art but not sport. The key point of our project is to establish communication between the filmmaker and the audience.
