Cinema at the edge gives new and recognized films and filmmakers the chance to ignite audience buzz, gain acclaimed exposure, and provide global distribution opportunities.

The Edgemar Center for the Arts is well known on the West Side of Los Angeles as a venue where up and coming talent share quality work, and Artistic Director Michelle Danner is thrilled to now invite the global independent film community to experience this vibrant beachside collective at the 3rd Annual Cinema at the Edge Independent Film Festival. Cinema at the Edge programs films with a unique voice and a clear vision, that blend genres or break conventions of the medium, with an added focus on life in the beachfront communities of Santa Monica and Venice and the talented group of independent filmmakers who make LA's West Side their home. The 2013 and 2014 festivals featured audience favorites from Sundance, SXSW and other major festivals, while maintaining a focus on world or regional premieres, challenging films that deserve a second look and showcasing local artists.

Previous iterations of the festival have welcomed Brett Ratner as an Honorary Chair, as well as a celebrity jury that included film veterans such as Susan Sarandon and John Singleton. The 1st and 2nd Annual Cinema at the Edge Independent Film Festival took place over four days in the spring of 2013, and was the natural expansion of these prior events. Narrative features, documentaries and programs of short films screened for packed theaters at the Edgemar Center, and festival-goers also enjoyed access to opening and closing night parties, an awards ceremony, a filmmaker bar crawl and and a series of panels focused on the various stages of the filmmaking process. Our panels were made up of prolific LA-based producers, development executives, entertainment attorneys and distribution professionals, joined by filmmakers screening their work at the festival. Awards were given out by the jury in the narrative, documentary and short film categories. Each screening at the festival is followed by a Q&A, even if it has to take place over Skype from countries away.

The festival in Vladivostok

Vladivostok has a very unusual history: in the tsarist times it was an open port and the city-fortress, in the Soviet times it had the status of the military base and closed city, and today it is on the way to becoming a free port again.
Vladivostok is the city that is sure to become a hub, connecting Europe and Asia, a place where every year the international cinematic community meets to share its best films.

The Pacific Meridian is a significant cultural event in the Far East, a great excuse to explore the Pacific Russia. Cinema is the most powerful and accessible art form, through which the festival introduces the audiences to contemporary culture.

The festival supports the positive development of relations of local, national and Asian filmmakers. The festival always presents only the best and unique films. The Pacific Meridian venues are where new projects emerge, filmmaking professionals meet the audiences, and young directors and actors find recognition.

For 18 years of its work the film festival has shown about 2,500 movies, seen by more than a million spectators. Every year the festival brings together film professionals (actors, directors, producers and film critics) from around the world, attracting audiences from other Russian regions and enables young people to gain practical experience by participating in organizing the festival.

Throughout each year, the festival team works on organizing this international cultural event, and the preparation is carried out from the end of the current festival, and till the beginning of the next. By the time of the festival opening more than 100 people, including volunteers, participate in the work of different venues of the film forum.

The Pacific Meridian Mission

We provide access to the most powerful films of our time and develop the culture of shared viewing, making the audience connected with the development of the art of cinema of the Pacific Rim countries. With the help of the art of cinema, we are transforming the world around us, making the local community more informed and involved in the film festival movement.

In accordance with this mission the objectives of the festival team are the following:

1. To maintain the organization of the festival at the highest level, meeting the world standards in accordance with the recommendations of the FIAPF;
2. To promote the audiences’ understanding of the world culture through selecting and presenting the best examples of the art of cinema;
3. To ensure accessibility to the audience films and educational programs, involvement and informational awareness of the regional community;

The Pacific Meridian is the only Russian film festival, which focuses on the cinema of the APR countries. Actively participating in the development of cultural exchange, the festival brings together more than 60 countries in Southeast Asia, North and South America and the Pacific Rim. Every year the film festival opens and shows the audiences modern films.

The Pacific Meridian IFF remains open, accessible and friendly for a wide and diverse audience. The slogan of the festival is “Films for all, films for every one”.

The Festival’s Juries

Since 2003, the international jury of the festival consists of the best representatives of the professional community of Russian and international filmmakers. The international jury determines the winners and awards prizes in the following nominations: Best Feature, Best Short Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and The Special Jury Award.

Since 2011, the Pacific Meridian IFF features NETPAC (Association for Promotion of Asian Cinema) Jury. It has also established a special NETPAC Award, Best Asian Film, which is given at 44 film festivals around the world.

Since 2013, the festival features the international FIPRESCI Jury. FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film Critics, established 90 years ago, brings together film critics and film experts around the globe. The main goal of the organization is to support cinema as an art and as a bright and independent way of expressing vision of the world. The award of this organization is of great importance in the cinematic world.

The Festival’s Program

During each festival about 200 films are screened in its venues. Films of all genres, length and formats find their place in its various programs.
COMPETITION program includes 8 full-length and 8 short films produced in the Asia-Pacific region this year. Each year, the number of incoming applications is increasing, but only 20 films are selected for the competition.

Non- competition programs present new world and Russian cinema. PANORAMA program is devoted to the most prominent film events in Russia and abroad. IN FOCUS program presents masterpieces from one of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, or of one genre. Over the years the festival has acquainted its audience with the films from Australia, Laos, North Korea, Russia, China and South Korea, with spy thrillers and horror films. In the 2024 edition of the Quibdó Africa Film Festival, we delve into a unique and vibrant space where Africa and its Diaspora converge. This festival is more than just a series of film screenings – it's a comprehensive cultural experience featuring workshops, conferences, and artistic exhibitions. It's an odyssey that traverses the realms of the unknown, journeying through time – from past to present and into the future. This event is not just about showcasing films; it's about exploring a space that embodies both memory and representation, a space that prompts us to reflect on our history and the myriad ways we have evolved.
The 2024 festival is set to be a grand assembly of avant-garde Afro filmmakers, representing a dynamic artistic and cultural movement that boldly reimagines new identities through the fusion of art and historical fantasy. These creators engage in a vibrant dialogue within this artistic whirlwind, challenging and redefining conventional narratives.
At the heart of our vision for 2024 is the concept of "afrodisruptive" cinema. This genre is meant to startle and challenge, to be potent, impactful, and unsettling. It aims to disrupt the tranquility of the status quo, upending and reinvigorating it. This revolutionary artistic concept spans 360 degrees, offering a critical reexamination and reinterpretation of African traditions and narratives.
In essence, the Quibdó Africa Film Festival 2024 is not just an event; it's a cultural revolution, a reawakening of perspectives, and a celebration of the relentless spirit of Afro cinema and artistry.

Dokumentarfilmfestival Globale Berlin

Globale Berlin: the film festival critical of globalization is a space that offers a platform for emancipatory content and solidarity with various resistance struggles.

The selected films make visible a multitude of different struggles that radically oppose a globally dominant system in which capitalist exploitation, patriarchal violence, racism and discrimination threaten life and its future.

In the mainly documentary formats, we learn from inspiring forms of resistance worldwide that defend and build a world in which a dignified and self-determined life for all humans and animals in harmony with nature is possible. The resistance cannot be deterred by new manifestations of capitalism and colonialism, which are trying in a crisis to sell old structures in a new guise as an alternative. The idea of the festival is also to make visible real alternatives that are practiced and growing every day, to learn from them and let them flourish.

In the selection of film projects, the focus is not only on the end product film, but often on its way of origin and the connection between content and how, why and for whom it was produced. Above all, Globale supports perpetual and collective solidarity networks. Current films (from the last two years) are preferred or those whose content is important for topicality.

During the festival there will be an exhibition as well as food on a donation basis for concrete projects.

On the history of the festival:
Globale was born in Berlin in 2003 and later spread to other cities and countries. The anti-globalization protests that were growing stronger at that time were decisive for the worldwide replication of the festival. Today the Globale takes place in Leipzig, Bremen, Marburg, Salzburg, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo and Bogota. It has the same approach everywhere, but is made up of different Orga teams, most of which work independently of each other.

About the Festivalteam:
We are people with a critical political position on the contents of the festival. Our group is an open, non-hierarchical group in which members participate according to capacity and initiative. We work all year round on the selection of films and preparations and regularly organise individual film screenings outside the festival with activists* who are currently in town. None of us are paid to organise the festival.
