We are an annual independent short film festival based in Brussels, Belgium, from January 20 to 24, 2021. Every year, we select over 100 short films and invite more than 40 filmmakers from all around the world.
The festival has been running for 16 years now with increasing success. We screen mainly independent films, not specially trashy movies. we love originality and creativity. Cheapness and Beauty !
The idea for Courts Mais Trash originated from a lack of a proper platform for independent short films to be screened.
Films that fail to meet conservative cinematographic standards are mostly snubbed by festival programmers and legitimate audio-visual venues. Trash is often just perceived in the provocative sense of the word; shocking and equally alternative, political, cheap and offbeat… .
Every category of film will be projected, from experimental to animation, through video clips and documentaries. No genre is left unexploited. The shorts don’t have to be ‘trash’ per se, but we do encourage work that is ‘out there’, on the cusp of the cutting edge and stimulating to the spectators interests. To avoid any possible confusion: the screenings are adults only.
Do you wish to participate in the biggest blowout alternative, underground and independent cinema has to offer, then act now! What are you waiting for?
GRRL HAUS CINEMA is an ongoing program of short films and video art made by women, non-binary, genderqueer, and trans people. A mix of local, national, and international artists present work from a variety of disciplines: narrative, documentary, experimental, and conceptual. With an emphasis on low budget and DIY, GRRL HAUS is a space for underrepresented voices in the arts today.
For 2021 our main screenings will be held in July at two outdoor film events taking place in Berlin Germany.
In addition all submissions will also be considered for our monthly curated online screenings, which includes interviews with the filmmakers.
If we have permission (due to pandemic) to make more live events throughout the year - we will! And we hope to continue our end of the year event at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, MA.
GRRL HAUS is not your typical film festival, instead of having one big event - we have multiple events throughout the year. Our goal is to show as many quality short films made by women, non-binary, genderqueer, and trans people to an international audience.
We completely celebrate DIY culture and focus on sharing works to all different types of audiences. This can include audiences at international museums or to audiences at underground clubs. We believe that every audience deserves the chance to see these works, rather than just the typical film festival networking crowd. We want to reach all audiences and celebrate the inclusivity of creative and unique work in film.
OUR HISTORY:
GRRL HAUS started in 2014 at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, MA, USA. Since then the event has showcased over 400 filmmakers, including multiple musical performances, video art installations, exhibitions and local vendors. In 2016 GRRL HAUS relocated to Berlin Germany and started hosting small screenings of local films. As we established are identity in Berlin we began to include music and arts.
Within the past few years we have grown to not just showcase films, but also art, music, dance, photography, handmade crafts and clothing, and even tarot, astrology and spiritual meet ups. The idea of GRRL HAUS is constantly expanding. We believe in no boundaries for creativity and are constantly looking for new ways to celebrate the work of underrepresented people.
For our complete history of screenings, events, exhibitions, concerts and parties - you can view all our teasers and selected artists on our Media page : https://www.grrlhauscinema.com/media.html
OUR PROJECTS:
International Screenings:
Our international screenings are curated from our over 400 yearly submissions. Through these submissions we select our favorite short films. This includes our end of the year festival screening at the Brattle Theatre and museum screenings at the prestigious Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.
Mobile Kino Screenings:
We hold 3-4 screenings through Mobile Kino Berlin a year. These screenings we curate around the best of our local short film submissions and a selection of international short films. We invite the filmmakers to Q&A’s following the screenings, where they discus their works.
Loophole Monthly Screenings:
Once a month GRRL HAUS hosts screenings at Loophole Berlin. These events focus on sharing local films by local filmmakers. All of these screenings are free to enter and enjoy. We believe it’s important to keep some events free for the public.
These events build up our sense of local community and follows through with one of our founding principles : sharing our excitement and love for low budget, DIY events and making them accessible to everyone.
Online Screenings / Gimme 5:
At GRRL HAUS CINEMA we were forced to cancel all our events during this Corona season, and every artist on our program list was left without a show venue. Energized and in defiance of the virus, we wanted now more than ever to keep going. We want the artists to keep going. We want to encourage them to stay active, to create, and most importantly to show their work. We want to reverse the status quo of art being left behind in times of crisis when it is needed most.
For past year (and into the future) we have been running online screenings, which we have been curating and presenting live on our online platform. We have been hosting these themed screenings on our website and Vimeo, as well as promoting all the films on our social media platforms. We host 10-15 short films on our site for a week. And then we remove them and continue hosting other themed sets.
Through these screenings our audiences are able to watch amazing short films in the comfort and safety of their home. All of the online screenings are free to watch, so they are accessible to anyone in these uncertain times.

Animacción is an international festival of animated short films, aimed to bring attention to the artistic potential of a whole new generation of animators.
Organized by the cultural association "Ánimas Anónimas", the festival returns this year for its 7th edition.
The call arises from our desire to increase the cultural offer of the city of A Coruña and its region, offering a sample of an artistic discipline with great creative potential, known worldwide, but little spread (me suena menos científico que disseminated xD) and supported locally.
The selected short films will be screened from December 12th to 18th, in the metropolitan area of A Coruña. The public attending these screenings will proclaim the winning piece with their votes. There will be also an award for the best children's short film, chosen by the students of several schools in A Coruña and the area.
Besides the screenings, we will schedule different talks and activities, for all audiences, related to the world of animation, so we can create a bridge between artists of this discipline and the public.
ACTRUM is a non-profit Cultural Association that works in all areas of the artistic sector.
In this festival, the finalist works will be screened online and it will be open to the public, who will have to vote through our website for their 3 favorite shorts/feature films from each section to award the public prizes.
Register your project! We accept any gender.

Online Isolation Short Videos Festival is the online event dedicated to the fight against Coronavirus situation in the World. The main aim of the festival is to support people in their self-isolation during these difficult times. The festival is arranged by the same organisators who run the popular Russian International Horror Film Festival and Awards “DROP”. The goal of the festival is to entertain people in self-isolation. Submitters can be both professional filmmakers, bloggers and ordinary amateur videographers. We accept only short videos shot by a smartphone or any other device not longer than 59 minutes and not shorter than 5 seconds. Each video should have some concrete message. It can be of any genre. But all videos must tell some story of your home isolation, describe your way of life in the present-day situation.
Now it is already the 4th edition of the festival. And we decided to enlarge the scope of the topic: the festival is dedicated not only to pandemic lockdown, but also to any sort of personal isolation: spiritual, mental, physical. It is dedicated to people’s loneliness in the World, to the human search of the essence of life and the source of love and freedom.

Azkuna Zentroa - Alhondiga Bilbao launches the Call for Entries to participate in its programme entitled BIdeOtik. Focussing on other audiovisual narratives, which forms part of their film and audiovisual season to be held in February and March 2021.
The Call for Entries is aimed at artists and video-creators whose artistic output in terms of video expression is channelled through the audiovisual medium.
Azkuna Zentroa is a Contemporary Societal and Cultural Centre in Bilbao, the Basque Country, that connects society and contemporary culture through six lines of programming: Contemporary Art, Live Arts, Cinema and Audiovisual, Society, Digital Culture, and Literature. Through constant dialogue with each other these different lines have generated a hybrid, multi-faceted, and expanded programme of events that favours the regular day-to-day presence of the contemporary, using mediation and education as a means to generate critical knowledge and transform society through art and artists.
As part of its programme of events, Azkuna Zentroa carries out various initiatives to support creation in contemporary cinema and audiovisual media, reaching out to different audience sectors through either completed works or the creative processes.
BIdeOtik. Focussing on other audiovisual narratives is conceived as a bridge where audiovisual creation and the audience can meet with the following purposes:
- Provide visibility for artistic, cultural, and creative audiovisual creation, as a tool for creation, reflection, and cultural and social transformation.
- To encourage the development of the audiovisual sector by creating a space to showcase local and international audiovisual works.
- To incentivise the dissemination and exhibition of contemporary audiovisual creation.
- To promote the use of new linguistic forms of expression through moving images.
- To consolidate Azkuna Zentroa as the place in Bilbao where the various agents participating in the audiovisual chain of creation can interact.
- There is no element of competition between the selected works, but rather the intention is to promote and disseminate different artistic and experimental practices within the video sector.
The artworks selected will be screened during the course of the BIdeOtik. Focussing on other audiovisual narratives programme of events at Azkuna Zentroa-Alhóndiga Bilbao, in accordance with the schedule to be compiled once the Appraisal Committee has given its verdict.
The works will be screened within the context of sessions designed to encourage interaction with audiences that are interested in exchange and dialogue regarding the process of audiovisual creation. As such, those authors whose works are selected will be required to attend in person on the date set for the screening of their work. These sessions will include a colloquium with the live audience, and will be held at the Golem Alhóndiga cinema at Azkuna Zentroa (Annex I. Technical specifications).
