Celaya Experimental Film Fest is a platform for creation and exhibition of experimental films. Works focused on technical, conceptual and narrative experimentation. The festival welcomes artists who have transgressed and transcended the barriers of aesthetics, technique, and the semiticity to break the dominant standards in the industry. We believe that experimental cinema is free, radical and purposeful and that at the same time it responds to the anthropological, social, artistic and philosophical need to explore horizons beyond the great hegemonic forms of cinematographic creation, and finding authentic ways of creating audiovisual art.

The festival opens its international submissions to all artists with original or personal proposals that go beyond conventional standards, exploring the limits of cinematographic language and searching for an essence or unitary mark within any work of their authorship.

Submissions for artists from Celaya and around Guanajuato can submit their films for free for all available categories.

Celaya Experimental Film Fest is an experimental film and contemporary art festival that seeks to promote the creation of new platforms and exhibitions of experimental and contemplative audiovisual language. It is also the space for expression and exhibition of sister arts such as performance, sound art and visual arts in a contemporary language and through the arts and cinematographic culture, all publicly and free of charge on the Mexican Bajío.

Incident with our servers

Logo of Festhome
Published: 26 Apr 2023

Last week, specifically on Friday 21st at night, we suffered a serious problem with the servers that made all Festhome services unavailable for several hours. Although we have already managed to have all the services up and running again, we want to explain what happened and the measures we are taking to avoid, as far as possible, another similar incident, the first one of this magnitude we have had in 13 years.

What happened?

Around 2 AM, all Festhome services became inaccessible. After a quick evaluation, we realised that the problem came from the main database server, on which the rest of the services rely to save and obtain the data pertaining to everything that is done in Festhome. Once the data center operators could physically access the server in question, they informed us that the hard drive was not working, so we started the process to recover the data from another hard drive and replace the failed one to put back the online service. This in itself is not a very big problem, and apart from the time lost without connection, which at this moment was a little over an hour, there would be no further incident. The serious problem arouse when accessing the second disk that contains the instant backups, as it did not respond either. From this moment on, we started working on trying to recover the data from the hard drives so that we could restore service with all the data, but hours go by without much progress and finding more and more problems with the hard drives. We believed that some kind of power outage or something similar had fried both hard drives at the same time, since it is extremely rare for two hard drives to die at the same time. In these 13 years we have never lost a single piece of information or registration and we are very ashamed of this episode.

What did we do?

Once the magnitude of the problem was known, we decided to work in parallel on using one of the backups external to the server to restore the service if we were not able to recover it with the data from the failed server. About 7 hours after the start of the incident, we had the service ready to be restored, but with the data from the last backup that was made external to the server, which is from Thursday morning, the 20th.

At this point, we had to make the decision to wait to recover the data from the corrupted hard drives so that there are no lost shipments or transactions, or to restore service without Thursday's data. After careful consideration, we decided that too many hours had passed without service, and it was important that users could continue to send and watch the movies, and whenever we had he data for Thursday, we would push it back to the new server manually.

This seemed to be the right decision, as several days later we are still trying to recover the other server, but we have less and less hope that we can indeed recover the data that was not saved on other servers.

What solutions have we found for now and the future?

Right now, our support colleagues have been manually rebuilding transactions that users have told us they lost, but it's an imperfect solution. We count on our users to notify us of problems they have had, to manually fix those problems and have all the data as it should appear in their accounts. It's a slow process, but right now it seems to be the only one possible.

As for the future, we're going to increase the redundancy of the databases in the live service with better point-of-failure protections, so that if a server suddenly fails, the service will continue to function. 13 years is a long time without losing data, but if we can be better, we must be, so we are also going to increase the frequency of external back-ups to the data servers, in case there is a similar problem in the future, we can recover data with less loss.

We want to apologise to all our users and thank you for your enormous patience in recent days. It has been many hours without sleep and with great nerves due to ignorance of what was happening. When you have a computer in front of you, it's already difficult at times but at least you can touch it. With servers hosted in bunkers thousands of kilometers away and with which you can only work with a Matrix-style command line, uncertainties and nerves increase exponentially.

We understand devotion as a surrender, mystical or not, to an experience, an idea, a thing, a thought, a person, an object, everything is susceptible to devotion.

“I wish to blur the firm boundaries which we self-certain people tend to delineate around all we can achieve.” - Hannah Höc

The International Experimental Film Festival organised by the Institute for Experimental Arts

The International Experimental Film Festival is an international encounter dedicated to experimental film art, announces the call for submissions. The festival will take place in Greece. The festival will experience screenings, installations, performances, conferences, film concerts, workshops. The festival seeks to expand the possibilities of film beyond traditional formats and spaces, creating a zone of creative contagions between cinema and the visual arts, historical works and the current production, analogic and digital, filmmaking and critical thinking.

Experimental cinema is a free, radical and purposeful cinema that responds to the aesthetic, political or philosophical need to see and explore cinematic horizons, away from large industries and hegemonic formulas of creation. It is through experimental cinema that we find authentic ways to create audiovisual art.

A cinema that breaks the narrative, and most of all visual, bounds to which we're used. A cinema that elaborates on film medium to its fullest, by including even the most extreme possibilities. John Cage said it well: an experimental action is one the outcome of which is not forseen; the cinema we're looking for is a cinema of the unpredictable.

The International Experimental Film Festival is the pioneering space, in the exhibition of experimental content in cinema, which seeks to show excellence and innovation in the independent production of the film world. Celebrate aesthetic diversity, new narratives, and new media and formats; a program that reveals the complexity of social, cultural and artistic phenomena. We understand experimental cinema like a divergent cinema, that vanishes the boundaries with art, emphasizing the experimental modes of creation.

The Institute for Experimental Arts was founded in 2008 in Athens- Greece as a non-profit platform of creative expression and research in the fields of theater, performance art, digital media, installation, poetry and art theory. The Institute is committed to existing as an open meeting point for poets-writers, directors, actors, theater engineers/ technicians, performance artists, photographers, video artists and the writers who develop new analytical tools on contemporary art, media & communication.

We accept all works that fits into the experimental film category and all its sub genres like found footage, essay film, expanded cinema, experimental animation, abstract film, experimental documentary, video art, virtual reality, direct animation or any other alike.
There is no genre, topic or length restrictions. The International Experimental Film Festival features Avant-Garde and Experimental films of any length.

The festival will always see the development of the cinematic language with critical thinking, regardless of the terms ‘cinema industry’ or independent cinema. For this reason, the International Experimental Film Festival will always bring a critical discourse to observe it through curatorial programs, symposium, and public lecture to broaden the knowledge of the ever-changing cutting-edge cinema aesthetics.

Our mission is also to create relations within contemporary art and cinematic spheres and to highlight cultural areas of immediate interest. Our goal is to generate interest in experimental cinema.

If your film has *any* dialogue, subtitles in English or Greek is a requirement.

Submissions without subtitles will be considered incomplete.

Terms and Condition:

+ All films with dialogue must have ENGLISH or GREEK subtitles
+ A submission does not guarantee a screening
+ OK if your film has screened before

We believe in culture as a pluralistic and intangible value, the awards assigned by the jury are purely symbolic. The selected films are going to be judged by an exceptional jury, and seen by a vast audience of film lovers.

ALTERNATIVE SUBMISSION METHODS

The International Experimental Film Festival proudly accepts entries on Festhome, a way to enter film festivals and creative contests.

“In its purest form, done right, watching an experimental film is the closest you can come to dreaming another person’s dreams. Which is why to watch one is, essentially, to invite another person into your head, hoping you emerge haunted.”
― Gemma Files, Experimental Film

Because of how much movies cost, it's dangerous to be experimental on one film after the other. But we can experiment with television. We can do things that are fringe and bring ideas to the table that are offbeat and original.
— Steven Spielberg

You dont do an experimental film to become rich, so the people who are involved are involved because they enjoy the creative aspect of it.
— Isabella Rossellini

Everybody's a mad scientist, and life is their lab. We're all trying to experiment to find a way to live, to solve problems, to fend off madness and chaos. — David Cronenberg
